Getting Cavemode working.

For most people setup is one click — the app does the work. Here is what to expect, plus fixes for the handful of things that can go sideways.

Setup

  1. Drag Cavemode into your Applications folder and open it.
  2. Say yes when Cavemode asks to look for sign-ins on this Mac — it always asks first, the look is read-only, and nothing leaves your Mac. It shows what it found (Claude Code, Codex and Gemini all count), you untick anything you don't want tracked, and one click connects the rest. Rather it didn't look? Decline and paste a sign-in code instead — that path always works.
  3. Tracking a different provider — OpenRouter, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Codex, or Gemini? Click "Something else" and pick it. Providers that need an API key show you exactly where to get one, with a link.
  4. You are connected when a real usage number appears in your menu bar. Cavemode never says "connected" until it has read your usage once.

Your sign-in goes straight into your macOS Keychain and never touches our servers — there are none. Cavemode checks your usage every 60 seconds and does nothing else over the network.

If sign-in fails: the guided fallback

No sign-in found, and signing in inside the app will not cooperate? Cavemode opens a guided, illustrated walkthrough right in the app — a picture for every step, showing exactly what to click and which value to copy from claude.ai. Nothing technical to figure out on your own — the app checks the value the moment you paste it, and tells you if something looks off.

You will find it on the connect screen: if the one-click route cannot find or use your sign-in, Cavemode offers the walkthrough on its own. Follow the pictures — it takes about a minute.

Troubleshooting

The app can't connect

First check that this Mac is actually signed in to Claude: open the Claude app, or claude.ai in your browser, and make sure you are logged in. Then go back to Cavemode and click Connect again.

Still stuck? Pick your provider under "Something else" and sign in right inside the app. If that fails too, the guided walkthrough (pictures included) gets you connected in about a minute. And if nothing works, email us — a human reads every message.

It connected, but the number is stuck at 0% or won't update

Claude's usage service takes an occasional nap. Right-click the menu bar icon → Force Refresh. Still frozen after 10 minutes? Check whether claude.ai shows your usage in the browser — if it doesn't, the pause is on Claude's side, and Cavemode recovers on its own once Claude does.

I'm on Enterprise SSO — does this work?

Yes, as long as you can log in to claude.ai in a normal browser tab. Connect the same way as everyone else — and if the one-click route cannot find your sign-in, the guided walkthrough works for SSO accounts too.

The character never dies, even at 100%

Cavemode shows the higher of your session % and weekly %. If your weekly % is at 100% but your session just reset to 0%, the app picks the max — which keeps the caveman dead. That is by design.

Do I need to pay or activate anything?

No. Cavemode is free — every feature, every released character and sound pack. There is no license key, no activation step, and no account to create. If the app ever asks you for one, you are not running a build from this site.

Which build should I install?

Both are free. The direct download from this site is the full version; the Mac App Store build is click-only for the minigame and skips OpenAI Codex tracking and the agent-activity bubbles, because Apple's sandbox blocks those three. Everything else is identical.
